Community Project: On The Verge Update

Dear ON THE VERGE supporters and enthusiasts

May 2014 be as sunny for you and your families as it has been in January. Wow what beautiful weather we have had!

The ‘On The Verge’ team had a brief break over Christmas & New Year and were back at work on the 8th January, as plants don’t rest. Last year flew by at an incredible pace – let me tell you what happened on the verge & mention a few of our projects for 2014….

Our fynbos garden on Paddock Rd is really looking like a garden now. The Avonrust mews garden too is starting to take shape, as is the sub-station bed and the new full sun post-office garden. Our new little garden on the Main Rd/Avonrust Rd corner is in its infant stages. All our agapanthus have been hit with this horrible borer, that weakens and eventually kills the plants, and have left sad gaps in many of our established beds. Our 60 odd trees planted along the verges are finally growing strongly and standing up to the wind and sun.

We were truly blessed last year with the proceeds from the annual Farm Village Potjie-kos competition, which went into wages & the new smart green overalls that the guys now have.

We now have so many verge projects on the go, that there is little time for new projects, as we try and get to around all the gardens in a month.

Last week we tackled some of the dead Pittosporums in the old hedge in Village lane, much to the consternation of the home owners in the Farm Village. Our humble apologies for not letting you know what we were doing – we have only taken out dead trees, and cleared space for the existing Wild Peaches to grow into a fast and thick evergreen hedge. We have also planted 5 Wild Silver Oaks in some of the large gaps, to provide a fast and pretty screen for the home owners.

Thanks to the help from the Common & Noordhoek Conservancy, we have been able to make use of a weed-eater a couple of times a month & have been able to mulch the trees and gardens with the awesome compost from the Common.

We struggled last year with a small team, as both Henry and Gerade found permanent work. It was difficult getting through all the work with only 2 guys at times. If anyone has a gardener that they are willing to sponsor to help us on a Wednesday, please let me know.

I am so grateful for emails, encouragement, sponsorship, donated plants & pots (some just appear at my gate & I don’t know who to thank).Thank you! Apologies if we haven’t implemented certain suggestions – life is a constant juggling act.

To our dear faithful sponsors, please can you continue, we are asking for a 6 monthly donation of R840.

Please spread the word and here’s to a wonderful summer of gardening.
